The Palestinian population is still facing harsh treatment by Israeli soldiers, and freedom of movement for citizens between regions is seriously impeded.  These measures have resulted in an increase of the number of women at Israeli checkpoints, giving birth, often assisted by PRCS medics.

Tuesday (14/03/2006), at 1:57 PM.  The PRCS Emergency station in El Bireh received a call reporting the case of a woman in an advanced state of labor at Kalandia checkpoint.  An ambulance was immediately dispatched to the checkpoint, but the woman had already given birth; fortunately a doctor had, by chance, been at the scene.  The PRCS medics examined the mother and child and transferred both to the ambulance for transport to the hospital.

The PRCS medical team requested permission from the Israeli soldiers to give them priority to pass, so as to quickly transport the mother and child to the hospital for examination, but their request was denied.  The ambulance was forced to queue behind the many cars already waiting to cross the checkpoint and wait its turn.  The Israeli soldiers did not take into consideration the health of the woman and her newborn baby and the urgency of bringing them to hospital after the emergency birthing procedure.
